Peak – Swan 65

About Peak – Swan 65

Space for 10 sailors
Accommodation for 6 guests

In 2023 PEAK will have her 50th anniversary.

A true ‘head turner’. Racing PEAK, with the appropriate sails and crew, is more than exiting. It is true sailing.
Our many sail combinations demand respect from all of those lucky enough to have used them. Testimonials are widely available.

PEAK has been raced hard, but always with respect, both for its crew as for herself.
For us us racing also serves another purpose. Racing her to the limits made her strong enough for cruising and chartering.

With this in mind we have continuously re-fitted Peak. Rudder, masts, booms and rigging, winches and tracks, all, yes, everything has been strengthened and tried. We did not want to have it otherwise. Indeed we do have carbon racing sails, which despite their age are still beautifully shape. But the wire standing rigging has not been replaced with Rod. No we replace it, in time, with over-dimensioned wire rigging. This ensures the structure of the hull receives the loads she was designed for. Also having the shorter mast version of the 65 range she is actually underpowered, something we happily acknowledge every time the wind and sea’s really set in.

About the captain

My wife and I are passionate sailors from the Netherlands. I - Pieter Houting- am proud to be part of the generation of sailors who live the passion of an almost foregone area. For my 20th birthday, back in 1978 (..) I received a book featuring the Swan 65 Sayula II, hull number 3 of the series produced Swan 65. She won the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973-74, despite being fully fitted for cruising.

In 2003, Swan 65, hull number 001 "PEAK" crossed my path and my wife and I did not hesitate a moment. Since we have sailed extensively with our family and friends in the western Med from our homebase Scarlino, as well as sailed to and from the Netherlands twice. Now that the children are studying, we are looking to share our passion for sailing PEAK. I have been sailing with 'charter' guests since 2014, much to my pleasure.

History of Peak – Swan 65

PEAK is the first of the famous Sparkman and Stephens-designed Swan 65 ketch line. In 2023 she will have her 50th anniversary. This line of yachts is world famous, known for their superior hull strength, control in any sea state, sea kindly sailing characteristics and fine turns of speed; the Swan 65 is a timeless classic.

PEAK’s classic interior is in typical Nautor style with matte-finish teak. She features a few modernizations for extra comfort, such as a wider owner’s bed, separate shower stall in the owners cabin and improved salon seating, among other details. The salon is particularly comfortable and the open-plan galley is very well equipped.

We bought PEAK in Stockholm in 2003 and brought her back to an immaculate state at the Dörr shipyard in Lemmer, Holland. Thereafter regular maintenance and upgrades have been undertaken by Scarlino Yacht Service, Nautor’s Swan’s Mediterranean base.

In 2011 she was re-fitted with a new aluminum toe rail amongst other works- by the famous ‘Cantiere Navale Dell’Argentario’ shipyard in Porto S. Stefano (Italy). Spring 2018 she has gone back to Argentario to re-generate her teak deck. She is truly in a superb condition. The existence of her original drawings at Nautor permit to keep her in an ‘as new’ condition.

In the Spring of 2014 she sailed effortlessly the 3000nm to Amsterdam. In 2015 she sailed back to her Mediterranean berth in Scarlino. After some family sailing and a 2 week trip around the isle of Corsica she was put asleep for the winter. In 2016 she sailed extensively throughout the Western Med, visiting amongst other places; Palma, Ibiza,Corsica, the Almalfi coast, Volcano Islands and Sicily. In 2017 she participated once again at the Rolex Giraglia Cup in St Tropez and cruised around Elba, Corsica and Sardinia. In 2018 we cruised around Elba and Corsica. From mid July to end August she sailed in the Greek Dodecanese waters around Patmos, sailing there from Scarlino with a stopover in Siracusa in Sicily and Patras in Greece. In 2019 we went on a 6 week trip to Northern Sardinia and southern Corsica. Good sailing in the Maddalena Archipel and beautiful moorings in the old ports of Bonifacio and Olbia.

May 2020 she went ashore at Scarlino Yacht Service, the Mediteranean base for Nautor's Swan Global Service in Italy. In 2021 she has received a new bottom and shaft, an upgrade of all systems and new communication equipment to prepare her for our voyage first to the Canaries and then to The Caribbean.
