Sailing involves visiting fragile, pristine and relatively undisturbed natural areas. We stand for our responsibilities and offer a low-impact and small-scale alternative to commercial (mass) tourism with a focus on nature preservation.
Our purpose is ecological conservation so that that future generations may experience these destinations relatively untouched by human intervention. At Cannonball we take pride in our social responsibility to reduce our energy consumption, to reuse items, to recycle and to conserve water.
Wouter van Hasselt has sailed from early age on starting sailing small dinghies like the Laser at an age of twelve. Later he switched to larger dinghies and keelboats and became a sailing instructor.
At the age of 23 he started participating in yachting races like the Fastnet race in various positions. He crewed as first mate on a 65ft Privilege Catamaran making two trans-Pacific crossings. From October 2003 until May 2004 he has been part of the permanent crew on the 80ft IOR Maxi Martella. Later that year he joined Whitbread racer Kings Legend a famous Swan 65 for a couple trans-Atlantic races and deliveries to the Caribbean and back to Europe. Blue water sailing has become his second nature.
For Wouter, skippering a yacht is one of the most satisfactory. For many of us, it grows into more than a mere pastime, with our jobs becoming only the means to finance our boating lives. Yachting is uniquely satisfying because, if it is practiced to the full, it engages every facet of our being. It can be as physical as we care to make it. It is intellectual, with the problems posed by navigation often requiring solutions of great accuracy. It is also aesthetic: there are few more beautiful human creations than a sailboat carving her way through the sea.
“At sea, I learned how little a person needs, not how much”
The yacht is a custom build, aluminium 73 ft IMS Mini Maxi designed by the famous yacht architect and designer German Frers. The first owner sailed the boat in the North Western Atlantic winning several prestigious races, including the Newport Bermuda race in 1988. In 1996 the second owner ordered the design of a new bulb keel to improve the yacht’s performance. He won several races, including the European Maxi championship. The boat has been sailed by the world’s most famous skippers and tacticians.
After a successful racing career with numerous victories, Cannonball was bought by an Italian owner and retired. The yacht’s interior and systems were upgraded for comfortable cruising the Mediterranean. Now Cannonball is back in business! Refitted in the Netherlands and fully upgraded to modern day Standards. Ready for some serious sailing.
By participating in regattas and yachting events in some of the world’s most exclusive locations, you can experience this once in a lifetime opportunity and join Cannonball’s professional crew competing alongside the top sailors.
