About the Lough Ree Yacht Club

Lough Ree Yacht Club was founded in 1770, although organised sailing events are known to have occurred on the lake even before this date. The Club while steeped in tradition, is progressive and has a fun and welcoming atmosphere, where the standard of both sailing and fun is high! There is a strong family participation ethos, it is common to see young and old mingling together both on and off the water and in a safe environment. The tranquil setting of the Club truly makes it special, whether it’s during the bustle of the event packed summer months or during the more austere winter months when sailing is still vibrant, the Club is never far from a member’s imagination, always planning their next visit.

History of the Lough Ree Yacht Club

Founded in 1770, Lough Ree Yacht Club is the second oldest sailing club in the world. The tradition of organised pleasure boating in Athlone goes back to at least 1731, with a regatta on the Shannon amongst the 'diversions' promised for a festival week in the town. Early activities appear to have involved a rendezvous at some agreed place and a cruise in company in the manner of a naval flotilla but racing eventually developed. From its earliest days it was known as Athlone Yacht Club and was renamed Lough Ree Yacht Club in 1895. At that time the lion and roses from the arms of Athlone town were also adopted as the Club burgee.
